The Best of Kitsilano – a locals Perspective
Vancouver, is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene. Nestled on the city’s picturesque west side, Kitsilano, often referred to as “Kits,” stands out as a neighbourhood that perfectly encapsulates the city’s essence. With its stunning beaches, verdant parks, trendy shopping districts, and diverse dining options, Kitsilano offers an array of exciting experiences for visitors. As a born and raised Kitsilano local, these are my recommendations must-sees while visiting this captivating Vancouver neighbourhood:
Embrace the Beach Culture
Kitsilano Beach or “Kits Beach,” is an iconic destination that exudes a laid-back coastal vibe. This sandy oasis provides ample opportunities for swimming, beach volleyball, and picnicking, while the stunning backdrop of the North Shore Mountains creates a postcard-worthy view. Go to the beach early during the summer months to claim your prime spot – you will find the sand areas full of families and kiddies with the grass patches catered more towards the older crowd. Swimming or laps at famous Kitsilano Pool is is another great option – AKA everybody has a place here! If you aren’t one for sitting and relaxing, you can also take a leisurely stroll along the seawall, rent a paddle-board or kayak, or shoot hoops at the basketball court. Also don’t think this is only a summer destination, Kitsilano Beach is beautiful all year around. You won’t be disappointed with the plethora of options in this one area!
Wander through Kitsilano’s Parks
Kitsilano boasts an abundance of green spaces that are perfect for relaxation and outdoor activities. Start with a visit to Vanier Park, where you’ll find the Museum of Vancouver and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Enjoy a leisurely picnic or join a game of frisbee in this scenic waterfront park. For a peaceful escape, head to the enchanting Kitsilano Rose Garden, featuring a colorful array of roses amidst beautifully landscaped grounds. And if you’re traveling with children, don’t miss out on the Kitsilano Playground, a fantastic spot for them to burn off some energy.
Discover West 4th Avenue
Known as the main shopping district in Kitsilano, West 4th Avenue is lined with an enticing array of trendy boutiques, unique stores, and stylish eateries. From fashion and home decor to outdoor gear and specialty shops, you’ll find an eclectic mix of offerings here. Indulge in some retail therapy, grab a cup of artisanal coffee, and explore the vibrant atmosphere that West 4th Avenue has to offer. These are a few of my local favourites that you should check out:

Just a short walk or bike ride away from Kitsilano lies Granville Island, a vibrant hub for arts, culture, and culinary delights. Discover the bustling Granville Island Public Market, where local vendors showcase their fresh produce, gourmet treats, and unique crafts. Enjoy live performances at the Granville Island Theatre, browse through art galleries, or indulge in a delectable meal at one of the island’s renowned restaurants. Most visitors, as they should, stop by Granville Island Brewing Company for a taste of local craft beer, BUT don’t sleep on the Dockside Brewing Company. Savor Culinary Delights
This is where I get excited! Kitsilano is a haven for food enthusiasts, with an impressive selection of dining establishments that cater to diverse tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood, farm-to-table cuisine, international flavours, or vegetarian delights, Kitsilano has it all. I won’t hold out on my favourites to recommend:
Try creative dishes at renowned restaurants such as Au Comptoir or Fable Diner
The Naam, an original Kits join and beloved vegan/vegetarian institution (& my personal favourite!)
Casereccio is a popular, up and coming restaurant known by the locals with amazing Italian eats.
Sushi is necessary in Vancouver. I would recommend checking out The Eatery & Banana Leaf
Grab and go MUSTS include Siegel’s Bagels and Grounds for Coffee
For the sweet tooth, gelato at Rain or Shine Ice Cream is a local favourite or Thomas Haas
